Safeguarding for the Future

I was called into a meeting with an attorney and Client C. Her son was in jail charged with financial abuse for taking large sums of his Mom’s money and spending it on his “toys”. A trust was being drafted to protect Mom’s accounts. We were asked to be her independent trustee to protect Client C’s money and her house. Shortly thereafter, Client C started to show signs of dementia and soon received an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. She was placed in a memory care unit and, unfortunately, died within six months. Because of the trust, when she died there was still a legacy for her other kids and grandchildren.
